Description:
New York: Carleton, 1864. First edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to fellow poet and literary critic Richard Henry Stoddard on the fly leaf in the year of publication. 1864, First Edition. Hardcover, in late 19th-century 3/4 leather with marbled boards, leather title label, chocolate endpapers. Fine, clean contents. Both boards detached but present. Lacks bottom compartment of spine leather and the rest of the spine leather is quite rubbed. Strong binding. In addition to writing poetry, Stedman was a banker, and his business card is laid-in. Stedman and Stoddard both wrote for the Knickerbocker, and were considered top notch literary critics, second to only James Russell Lowell. An excellent presentation copy in need of rebinding.
