About This Item

London: Macmillan, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 22.5 x 14 cm. Octavo. 258pp. Red-orange boards in price clipped dust jakcet. Light edgewear to the jacket. From the jacket: "In the eighteenth century trade with the Turkish Empire and the Levant was declining from its former high prosperity, and the common view was that it was being strangled by the monopoly powers of the Levant Company, discouraging enterprising newcomers. Professor Davis takes a different view, looking not at the formalities of the Company's organisation and power but at the actual operations of the merchants who traded with the Levant, the sources of their wealth, the changing demands for the goods they traded in, and the kind of risks they ran in trade and in money-lending.
