Printed photographs illustrating the history of the Franciscan Order in the middle east with expanatory text in Laton, English, French and German. Quarter leather spines with decorated brick red cloth boards. Gilt titles with black decorated borders and bevelled edges. Matching spines. Superb binding in fine condition. Bookplate of 'Burton Constable'. Missions described throughout the Middle East. Each plate has descriptive letter-press on verso facing the relevent plate with numbering on the letter-press page. A rare collection of photographs each described and presented in lavish book with touching to the photographs and contents. An earlier version had been pub. in 1882 with plainer presentation and only 108 photographs with no descriptions, This enlarged and sumptuous production was an attempt by the authorities to give a postive view of the Franciscans.. 1st Edition. Hardback. Fine. Oblong 4to.
