Spine sun faded and worn to head and tail. 183pp with portrait frontispiece. Gift inscription from Lady Wantage (a relative by marriage of Grey) dated 1917 on front free endpaper. Inside is nice and clean. Earl Grey was not originally expected to inherit his title and began his career as a Liberal politician initially in the Commons and then in the Lords, after inheriting the Earldom. He was also a business man as a Director of the British South Africa Company, who reported directly to Cecil Rhodes, after his return from South Africa he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland and finally was Governor General of Canada 1904–1911. Grey took an active interest in Women's suffrage, improvement in slum housing conditions, electoral reform in Canada and other liberal issues of the day. Ahead of his time in many things, but not all.
