About This Item
Philadelphia: Press of Allen, Lane and Scott, 1902. 45 pp. Folio. Red cloth boards. Gilt lettering on the spine and cover. Edges of boards and corners somewhat rubbed. Boards have some handling wear. Top edge gilt; all edges trimmed. Internally, a clean copy with minimal foxing to the extremities of the volume. Illustrated with eight map plates. The Alaska-Canada boundary question was settled by treaty in 1903. This book narrates the history of that frontier, and illustrates it with plate maps that provide additional context and background to the dispute. While the treaty settled the question of the borders between the two nations, the frosty conclusion by Balch was that "[by] no possibility has Canada any right to territory touching tide water above fifty-four degrees forty minutes. The United States should never consent to refer such a proposition to arbitration." The question of Arctic sovereignty is still of interest today, and likely will increase in the future. 1902
