About This Item
Leather-covered boards, embossed with gold-lettered title: "The Klondike Gold Fields." The edge-worn covers have been reattached; no spine. 2.5 pounds. When the Klondike Gold Rush became known to the outside world in July 1897, the news created a huge demand for information, so this first edition designed for gold seekers had several printings in various cities (Chicago, Philadelphia, & some unknown.) Some covers were embossed leather and some were cloth with varying illustrations. The contents in all cases appear to have been exactly the same. In this first edition, the binding of all pages is tight. Slight foxing and age discoloration occasionally appear throughout. Two fold-out maps intact; tear in largest map repaired. Contains 31 period photographs and engravings. The difference between this first edition and those priced up to $500 is the cover; the quality of the stitch binding and quality of the print on the pages within is the same—near fine.
Synopsis
From the preface: "Giving the complete account of the rise of gold fever, the excitement produced by the news of unlimited deposits of the precious metal; the rush of miners seeking fortunes at Klondike; hasty preparations for the long and perilous journey and the formation of companies wager to take possession of the region abounding in untold wealth."
