About This Item

Barcelona: Ajoblanco Ediciones, 1974. First Edition, First Printing. [not to be confused with 2004 reprints of first six issues]. Staplebound. Very Good. 24pp. 33 cm x 24 cm. Tall Folio. Staplebound magazine on flimsy paper-b&w graphics. Condition: Very Good at least. Ephemeral, fragile item in lovely condition with splash to upper cover which is a little grotty, v. light toning to page edges and faint wear to extremities. Ajoblanco. Spain. (from "One of the great magazines who included philosophers, poets, architects, artists, comic drawers related with the contra cultural scene of Barcelona in the 70's. They got together in the same project of political opposition as others against Franco regime. Together politics, other interests were of social context such as environmentalism, anti-psychiatry, collectivism, gay movement etc. It achieved up to 1 million readers in 1977. It was directed by José Ribas." Issue no. 1 "coordinado": Pepe Ribas, Toni Puig, Claudi Montana...etc. etc. Issue no. 1 "colaborado": Luis Racionero, Friederich Hundertwasser, etc.etc. Content includes current cinema including: Clockwork Orange, Straw Dogs, Last Tango in Paris, etc. etc.. Time is spent discussing the theoretical demise of theatre..."Abandonad el teatro!" "Esta frase-de Julien Beck-creador del Living Theatre-coincide con unas recientes declaraciones de Grotowski en las que afirmaba que el teatro es un genero a extinguir." A dire prophesy that happily failed to come true. Ajoblanco is an example of an important 70's and beyond counter-culture magazine available in numbers by the trade that is NOT too pricey yet to put together a definitive run...a worthwhile endeavor...here's issue No. 1.
