About This Item

London: Herbert Jenkins, (1952). First Edition. Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xiv + 314 pp. Very Good+, with bookplate and light sunning to edges; in a Good+, mylar protected dust jacket with light edgewear and soiling. From dust jacket: This is the age of inter-hemispherical air strategy. Peace can be maintained -- or victory in war achieved -- only by a clear-cut superiority in long range aircraft capable of operating across oceans and destroying an enemy’s means of waging war at their source. Only such a force can deter aggression and shield the countries of the West from atomic destruction. Such is the thesis of this book. In an eye-witness report on Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Bikini the author re-evaluates the place of the atom bomb in modern warfare, and from this emerges the conclusion that despite its fearful power the A-bomb does not alter the basic principles in the air-power era. Sharply taking issue with present military policies, de Seversky deals with such vital points as: Why present attempts to build great ‘balanced’ land-sea-and-air forces could prove disastrous. Why the decisive battles of the next war must take place in the air. Why the present ‘unified’ defence programme is basically unsound. Why Russia would have a decisve advantage if the military forces of the West were committed to ground warfare. How naval power is being made obsolete and why ‘the myth of aircraft-carrier’ may undermine chances of peace of victory. Major de Seversky is an outstanding authority on air strategy and tactics. Just before the entry of America into the last war he published Victory through Air Power, a remarkably prophetic book which sold more than half-a-million copies. This work was subsequently animated for instructional purposes by Walt Disney and in 1943 was shown at the request of Winston Churchill to the members of the Quebec Conference. It was after this showing that the Combined Chiefs of Staff decided to give air power the necessary priorities to guarantee control of the air before the Normandy landings. Air Power: Key to Survival is the logical successor to that book. It is a bold doctrine which it advocates, and one which will doubtless be as vigorously attacked from some quarters as it will be praised in others.
