Native Vermonter, farmer, horticulturalist, Governor of Vermont, United States Senator, Aiken was called the "conscience of the Senate." He is perhaps best remembered for his Vietnam peace plan often paraphrased as "Declare victory and get the hell out!" Aiken was also one of seven Republican senators who denounced in writing the tactics of Senator Joseph McCarthy, warning against those who sought "victory through the selfish political exploitation of fear, bigotry, ignorance and intolerance." Beloved in Vermont, his last campaign ran up expenses of $17.09, albeit in 1969 dollars.
