Discreet, tiny book label on front pastedown; fine in publisher's slipcase, very slightly marked; issued without dust jacket.. 8vo, 311pp; t.e.g.; black cloth, stamped in gilt on the spine. One of only 45 copies in the special limited edition, bound with a page of the original corrected typescript of the novel tipped in on a stub just prior to the title page. Of the forty-five copies, thirty numbered copies were for sale. This is one of the fifteen roman-numeraled and signed copies for private distribution and has been additionally inscribed by Prokosch on the front free endpaper: "For Josephine, with much admiration & gratitude & affection, from Frederic". Josephine Crane, whose small book label is affixed to the upper corner of the front pastedown, was a wealthy New York socialite, widow of Massachusetts senator Winthrop Murray Crane of the Crane stationery family. Mrs. Crane was a prominent supporter of the arts and literature, a co-founder of the Museum of Modern Art and hostess of a weekly literary and cultural salon in her Fifth Avenue apartment, where Prokosch was a frequent guest.
