Paris: Calmann-Levy, 1987. First Edition. From the library of the great film director and art collector Billy Wilder. Laid in is a typed letter signed from Manfred Steinfeld to Billy Wilder on printed Shelby Williams Industries stationery, dated August 16, 1993, and reads in full: “Dear Mr. Wilder, I am enclosing herewith copy of the book recently published in conjunction with our Bentwood Furniture Collection Exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago, ‘Against the Grain.’ Your interest in Bentwood is known to every collector. I would appreciate hearing from you after you have had a chance to peruse the catalog. Kindest regards, Manfred Steinfeld.” Illustrated with 75 black & white photographic examples of Bentwood furniture and an appendix of 80 black & white reproductions of other pieces of furniture in the collection. Oversize format, 9 3/4” x 11 1/4”. Fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Billy Wilder’s legendary status in Hollywood as a director, screenwriter, and producer includes such classic films as Ninotchka, Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Stalag 17, Some Like it Hot, The Seven Year Itch, The Apartment, and The Fortune Cookie.
