About This Item
Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1969. First Edition. hardcover. fine/fine. A fine copy of this classic of typography. The Latin text (republished for the first time sine 1729) is set in Mardersteig's handcut Griffo font. The English text (the first appearance in English) is set in Stanley Morison's Monotype Bembo. Both types emulate (but don't exactly copy) the fonts Francesco Griffo of Bologna made for Aldus Manutius's 1496 of De Aetna. Following the Latin (Griffo) and English (Bembo) texts, Marderstersteig provides an essay on the fonts, including one page (still letterpress) presenting a paragraph of the 1496 font, followed by a matching paragraph of the same text in Griffo and Bembo. The book itself (quarter morocco over matching burnt sienna paper boards) is in completely fine conditon, with the prospectus laid in. Housed in a matching slipcase in Officina Bodoni's house style (leather tips), also fine. One of 125 copies. This English-language edition is scarce.
