Embossed moose vignette on both front covers. Vol. I rebacked. Volume II spine lettering faded and dulled. xvi, 514, 517 pp. 12 plates. Volume I has two bookplates on inside board and a bookplate on FEP (Previous owners: Elihu Phinney (first owner of Doubleday Field in Cooperstown NY, noted early American bookseller from Ostego, NY), Alfred Corning Clark (heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune, purchased from Phinney in 1878), Frederick Ambrose Clark (the noted equestrian). Owners name on title page and FEP of Volume I. <br><br> A fascinating account of exploration and discovery in the early years of this country, difficult to put down once started. The writer tells of his travels through the midwest, along the Mississippi, the upper U.S. and lower Canadian lands around the Adirondacks, the Green and White Mountains, and over to Maine and its waterways; through the Alleghany Mountains, and along the Potomac River.
