About This Item
London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1923. A New Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Upton, Florence. Original coloured pictorial boards with brown cloth spine. Approx. 11in by 8.5in, oblong 8vo. 64pp with numerous full page colour illustrations and monochrome text illustrations. This is the first of 13 Golliwogg books written and illustrated by the Uptons. In this first book in the series the golliwogg was not intended as the 'star' of the show and he was really just a supporting character to the Dutch peg dolls, appearing in just over a third of the illustrations. However he proved so popular at the time that he became the central character in the subsequent books. In all of the Upton books the Golliwogg is presented as friendly and kind. This is the story of Dutch peg dolls in a toy shop that come to life at midnight. With no clothes they make themselves a dress out of the American flag. Heavy wear to front board, crease and bend; small piece of corner missing from front and rear board. Piece of paper cover absent from rear board. Spine sun faded. Nice and clean inside, very good + condition.
