Second edition, an unauthorized edition published simultaneously with the authorized Scribner, Welford, Armstrong edition (NY). Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.[2] 190 [2]. With 20 wood engraved plates and a frontispiece by French artist and illustrator, Jule Ferat. Publisher's brown cloth, elaborately decorated in gilt and black. Dark endpapers. Very light wear to head, heel and corners. Very good. An exceptionally bright, clean and tight copy of this pirated edition of the novel also known in English as 'Meridiana' or 'The Adventures of Three Englishmen and Three Russians in South Africa'. [Behemoth: A primal unconquerable monster of the land".] Copy of J. H. Patten with his signature at top of title page. Possibly the NY born, "Hon. J. H. Patten", South Dakota pioneer who was part of the states' constitutional convention and territorial legislature.
