by John Mitford

- first
Rare first edition of John Mitford's entertaining story of a young midshipman in Lord Nelson's Royal Navy.
First edition in book form, originally issued 1819 in eight monthly parts.
With twenty hand-colored aquatint engravings by Charles Williams, vii, 224 pages of text and 68 pages of Notes.
A cash-in imitation of Alfred Burton's Adventures... with illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson, published in 1818.
With lively illustrations of an apprentice midshipman's rambles in the brothels of Portsmouth, fighting the captain in the wardroom, locked in shackles in the gunroom, riding pigs through the market of Gibraltar, stealing planter's wives in the West Indies, humiliated by sailors when crossing the equator, and finally discharged at Greenwich Hospital.
John Mitford (1782-1831), joined the navy as midshipman on HMS Victory. He served on ships in battles in the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, Egypt and the West Indies. He was discharged from the navy as an insane alcoholic in 1814, and thereafter made a living as a writer and editor. He is sometimes credited as the author of the similar naval romp, Adventures of a Post Captain, 1817, also illustrated by Charles Williams. He published a book of his collected poetry in 1818, The Poems of a British Sailor, with poems written at Mitford Hall and on board naval ships all over the globe. When writing the Adventures of Johnny Newcome in 1819, he lived in an old gravel-pit in Battersea Fields and spent his fee on gin. In later years, he is said to have edited the New Bon Ton Magazine, 1818-1821. He is said to have lived over a coal-shed near Leicester Square and died in St. Giles's workhouse in 1831 while editing the Quizzical Gazette and Merry Companion.
Illustrator Charles Williams (died 1830) was a British caricaturist, etcher and illustrator. He illustrated the Rowlandson imitations Dr Syntax in Paris (1820), My Cousin In the Army (1822) and The Tour of Doctor Prosody (1822).
Half brown leather with paper label on spine, paper covered boards, plates and text pages with occasional offsetting and spotting, plates with deep hand colour.

London: Printed by P. Rose and Son, Broadmed, Bristol, 1835. First Edition. Hardcover. 44pp. Contemporary cloth backed boards, portrait frontispiece. With the bookplate of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet, on the front board and the front pastedown endpaper and the small, gilt bookplate of Alexander McGrigor on the front free endpaper. Also with the small blind stamp of Crendon Hall on the title page and first page. In his book "On Poisons, in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence and Medicine" (Lea & Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1848), Doctor Alfred Swaine Taylor states: "The great value of chemical evidence in otherwise doubtful cases of poisoning, was never more strongly shown than at the trial of Mary Ann Burdock at Bristol, in 1835... The body of the deceased had been buried fourteen months: it was exhumed, and the poison discovered in the stomach and viscera." This advance in forensic science led to a substantial increase in poisoning trials. Chipping to spine, some soiling to boards. Internally clean…

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and…

Description:
Paris, 1868. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First Editions, 7 volumes published between 1868 and 1873. A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. This has been a working set and as well as bearing the bookplate of their original owner at…

Her membership in the Young Women's Christian Association, The Glee Club, and The Girl Reserves among many other clubs are all detailed. A musicophile, Cox enthusiastically attended (and collected at) state-wide concerts, from high schools and universities to the Kansas Symphony Orchestra, Mirza Theatre and more.Ephemera includes holiday celebration notes, special edition Christmas stamps, Epworth League ephemera, as well as Valentine's Day cards and cut-outs gifted to our heroine, comedy letters from "The Goblina", and a pink token from Health Week, March 1926 "I wear Hygienic Shoes".Throughout the collection, Cox acquires a car, and begins…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
