Each volume in the series has been photographically reproduced from the original edition. The publisher's insert tells us that William Alonzo Allen was born in Ohio in 1848 and recalled that the highlights of his boyhood were discovering the rile, along with his own talent for shooting squirrels, and being apprenticed to the local gunsmith. By the end of his first chapter Allen has left the 'overcrowded East', headed for the Black Hills, shot his first deer and paned his first gold. By the end of his second chapter he had been elected captain of his wagon train, fought two battles with hostile Indians, been wounded and met Calamity Jane. Though Allen was an enthusiastic Indian fighter on that trip and later, he also made friends with some Crow Indians in Montana. Allen worked as a freighter, gunsmith, blacksmith, and a frontier dentist (though that is not recounted here). But he was most known as a sporting hunter. This book focuses mostly on that aspect of his life. Six-Guns, Number 76. Includes the publisher's insert.
