The emigrant who describes his adventures in this book was William Thornley, an Englishman. During the long trade depression which followed the Napoleonic Wars he decided to seek a new life in Tasmania, then still known as Van Diemen's Land, and with all his family and belongings he ventures upon the long uncertain voyage..
