About This Item

Jonathan Cape, 1926. First Edition. Cloth. Good/No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition; 416pp, illustrated, 32 b/w plates, coloured folding map. Red cloth covers with gilt titling to spine. Arctic Bib. 16774; Account of an expedition to colonize Wrangel Island 1921-3, directed by Stefansson. " Doctor Stefansson is a Canadian who has spent no less than ten winters in the Arctic. Wrangel Island, lying within the Arctic Circle, is clearly a British possession, and to make the title secure Doctor Stefansson in 1921 landed a party of four men and one woman who were prepared to stay and by hunting, maintain themselves for a period of two years. The little band met with disaster, and on the arrival of the relief expedition in 1923 only one of the members, the woman, was alive. Wrangel Island is clearly inhabitable, in spite of the ill luck which attended the expedition of 1921-3, the failure of this expedition was due to outside causes, as Doctor Stefansson clearly shows. The book recounts from documents and diaries the actual life of the party on Wrangel Island, so that the reader feels as if he were actually present with them and sharing their adventures. One of the most interesting and absorbing narratives of Arctic exploration, it is also the work of an explorer who is a thinker and a man of vision." Ex Libri, remnants of library bookplates to eps, closed tear to title page. Page edges dusty, wrinkling to pages, map stained on edges. All complete. Good reading copy. Ex Libris bookplate.
