About This Item
1938-61. First editions, first printings, of Volumes II-VIII, fourth printing of Volume I. This complete set includes a presentation copy of Volume I, inscribed on the front free endpaper to the publisher of the final volume, and Hoover's own copy of Volume IV, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. The presentation inscription reads: "To J. H. Gipson with the sincere regards of Herbert Hoover". James H. Gipson (1885-1965) was the managing director of Caxton Printers. His bookplate is on the front pastedown of the inscribed volume. The Addresses collect Hoover's post-Presidential speeches. After his presidency, Hoover lived for over three decades and was frequently openly critical of his successors, both Democrat and Republican. He was particularly caustic in his criticism of Roosevelt's New Deal and later the early foreign policy of the Cold War. These speeches had a lasting legacy: his "criticisms of both the New Deal and the Cold War would be resurrected in the 1960s among the 'New Left' and again in the 1990s among the 'New Right'" (ANB). The set is scarcely encountered complete and with jackets, given the four publishers and 23-year span of publication. Eight volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines and front covers lettered in gilt. With dust jackets. Neat ownership stamp to front pastedown of vol. VIII, vols. IV and VI with shelfmarks to title pages. Slight rubbing and wear at extremities of jackets, a couple closed tears, unclipped except for vol. III and vol. IV (latter with overprice), vol. VIII with neat tape reinforcement on verso. A very good set.
