About This Item
Philadelphia: Franklin Printing Co, 1889. Pamphlet. Very Good. 19, [1] p.; 23 cm. Pink wrapper printed in black. The House of Refuge was established in 1826 as an alternative to prison for Philadelphia's juvenile delinquents and child vagrants. In 1911 the name was changed to Glen Mills Schools. William Massey (1808-1891) was a very successful brewer in Philadelphia. Isaiah V. Williamson (1803-1889) was a merchant and founder of the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, now the Williamson College of the Trades, the only trade college in the U.S. that costs the students nothing. Each of the men had given the House of Refuge $100,000. The address by N. Dubois Miller provides a history of the institution and explains how the money will be used. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; one light vertical crease; otherwise, clean and solid.
