Pages throughout have light soiling in margins, and edges of pages are chipping and brittle with age. Pictures are clean and unmarked. Hinges are cracked but hold. Plate 16 is completely detached. Boards have significant edgewear, scuffing and rubbing. Cardboard is exposed along edges and at corners. Boards are lightly to moderately soiled, scuffed and rubbed. Brown cloth along spine is frayed at ends. Text block is lightly soiled. PICTURES PROVIDED UPON REQUEST.

London, Chapman & Hall, 1890. . First edition. Landscape 4to (21.5 x 31.5 cm), 20 chromolithographs after Lloyd, including title-page vignette, extra-illustrated with the complete set of 20 original watercolour drawings by lloyd, handsomely bound by Riviere in full crushed red levant morocco, gilt extra, broad gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, slipcase, joints lightly rubbed, a unique item in fine condition. A unique copy with the original highly finished watercolour drawings.William Whitelock Lloyd was a second lieutenant in the first battalion of the 24th Regiment. He served through the Zulu campaign and received a medal. The engravings illustrate the life of an office in barracks, on board ship, and in the field during the Kaffir War of 1878 and the Zulu War of 1879, and include some sketches apparently taken in the subsequent campaign in Burma.
