"I cannot say that I saw the western shore of Baikal, for it was midnight when we arrived, and so dark that I am not sure whether what loomed before us was a hillside forest of a thunder-cloud. Before dawn I was far away from it, for the post-station at Leestvanssehnia - the long name of the little port where our stearmer stopped - was quite close to the mooring-place, and had such a good supply of horses and tarantasses that I was able to start at once; and so, by seven in the morning, the fifty miles of intervening table-land was crossed, and I was looking down from the western edge of it at the city of Irkutsk." - pages 161-162. .
