The Press, in the fall of 1889 (the year Washington became a state), called for "hardy citizens . . . to acquire fame by unveiling the mystery which wraps the land encircled by the snow capped Olympic range." Nothing more was written but for breif accounts here and there. Author Wood has returned to diaries of the expedition members and other original records to reconstruct the experiences of the The Press Party, which was composed of six men, four dogs, two mules, and 1500 pounds of supplies. An extraordinary adventure of near six months under very trying terms. Book is dedicated to the hardy men of The Press Party: James H. Christie, Charles A. Barnes; John W. Sims, John H.
