Surprisingly minor wear to the boards and slight shelfwear tom the corners. Pageblock is toned. A mild musty smell adheres to the book. Previous owner’s Ex Libris sticker and 1938 gift inscription on the front pastedown. From Wikipedia: Admiral Byrd was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, organizer of polar logistics, and winner of the Medal of Honor, Silver Lifesaving Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Hubbard Medal, Langley Gold Medal, and Navy Cross. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His claim to have reached the North Pole is disputed. The book is his memoir of his disastrous 1934 polar expedition, in which he intended to spend 6 months alone at the North Pole, during which he discovered that he was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. The memoir was an enormous best-seller in 1938.
