Lane (1801-1876), a British orientalist and translator, details customs of birth, marriage and death, religion, politics, and even magic, music and alchemy in Egypt, helping to perpetuate the image of a mysterious eastern culture. Completely immersing himself in Egyptian day-to-day activities, Lane is recognized for his accurate depiction of daily life, making this a distinctive work for its time. Lane is best known for his translation of One Thousand and One Nights.
