About This Item

Edinburgh, Scotland: Canongate Books, 2010. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Edinburgh, Scotland: Canongate Books, 2010. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 263 pages. The author's romance-cum-political intrigue novel. One of Ismail Kadare's finest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Ismail Kadare's "Aksidente" in a felicitous English translation. A tragic love story amid politics and intrigue that has influenced scores of contemporary novelists, not the least the great Javier Marias whose entire novelistic template it is: The role and ramifications of a life-changing accident in every human being's life - especially, love life. "Kadare is incapable of writing a book that fails to be interesting. Starts out as one kind of book and turns into something else entirely. It takes you to the sort of place novels don't routinely visit these days, and also leaves you grateful you don't have to dwell there" (The New York Times) . An absolute "must-have" title for Ismail Kadare collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated (before publication) in black ink-pen on the half-title page by the author: "Ismail Kadare 08.10.10". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Ismail Kadare pre-signed a limited number of copies such as this through his publisher. As such, unlike copies that he signed in person, they are ante-dated by about ten days. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed and pre-publication dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Precedes and should NOT be confused with the American Edition. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Regarded by eminent scholars and critics as one of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ISMAIL KADARE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1847673392.
