Her daughter, who had made good progress in art without tuition, had quickly derived benefit from Ibbetson's few lessons. His Painting in Oil was published in 1803...The book - written at Ambleside - was in the press when his Edinburgh friend, George Thomson, writes with humour and with characteristic enthusiasm: 'As far as I can pretend to judge, it will be extremely useful to young artists, who should in that case raise a Statue to you large enough to be placed on top of Skiddaw.''
