First Edition of Great Britain's third census, showing a population of 14.4 million people, an increase of 1.8 million over the census of 1811. The 1821 census was the first to break down Great Britain's population by age; the data showed that about half the British population was under 20 years of age, in contrast to about 25% today. John Rickman, who drafted the bill that became the 1800 Census Act, supervised the first four British censuses and prepared the abstracts and reports for each.
