ABRAHAM LINCOLN

A Play

By John Drinkwater

London : Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd.

3 Adam Street, Adelphi, MCMXXI

DESCRIPTION

(ii) + 72pp + (ii)

Book measures 180mm x 125mm approximately.

fourteenth impression

Nicely bound in quarter green calf over green cloth covered boards. Spine with intricate gilt decorated compartments with gilt title and date labels. Marbled end-papers to front and rear. Top page edges in gilt. Original first performance (12th Oct 1918) cast members list to rear.

CONDITION

Holding very firm indeed. A few minor scratches and scuffs. Both boards are a little bowed. Internally, the pages are incredibly bright and fresh with just the odd spot, mostly to front end-papers. Also the pages are a little tightly bound into the seam so do not fold over too well.

Please refer to the photo images for a clear indication of both condition and content.

INTERESTING

John Drinkwater (1882 to 1937) was an English poet and dramatist. Drinkwater was born in Leytonstone and worked as an insurance clerk. In the period immediately before the First World War he was one of the group of poets associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock, along with Rupert Brooke and others.

In 1918 he had his first major success with his play Abraham Lincoln. He followed it with others in a similar vein, including Mary Stuart and Oliver Cromwell. In 1924, his Lincoln play was adapted for a two-reel short film made by Lee de Forest and J. Searle Dawley featuring Frank McGlynn Sr. as Lincoln, and made in de Forest's Phonofilm sound-on-film process. His first volume of his Collected Poems was published in 1923. He also compiled anthologies and wrote literary criticism, and later became manager of Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
