About This Item

Doubleday, Doran & Company, New York, 1945. Later Printing. Hardcover (Printed Boards). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: ngri & Edgar D'Aulaire. Book A well-preserved copy of an early printing of the 1940 Caldecott Medal winner (although the note on the front flyleaf of the dust jacket gives the date as 1939). In their note on the book, Peterson and Solt (1982) write, "Five-color stone lithographs alternate with black and white illustrations of lithographic pencil on stone, and all reflect the wholesome qualities for which Lincoln was famous." This early reprint does not have what they describe as "changes in the illustrations ... and even the frontispiece ... in later editions." Size: Between 11"-13" - Quatro (4to). [55] pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked, with the exception of a neat line written in ink on the verso of the free front endpaper noting the Caldecott Medal award. Bound in blue cloth spine over paper-covered boards. The corners are good, though worn at the tips. There is a 2" area at the top edge of the front board that is worn, as well. Minor shelf wear to the foot of the spine. The unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket has some small chipping at the head and foot of the folds. Four small closed tears have been sealed on the reverse of the jacket with acid-free mending tape. There is a note of the Caldecott Award at the foot of the front flap, but there is no sticker on the front cover as with later printings. The jacket is now protected by a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Illustrator: ngri & Edgar D'Aulaire. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Children; Illustrated works; Juvenile literature; United States; 1940s; Biography & Autobiography. Main Picture: D'Aulaire (1945), Abraham Lincoln - Front panel and spine of the dust jacket. Picture 2: D'Aulaire (1945), Abraham Lincoln - Rear panel of the dust jacket and page edges.
