About This Item

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company,, 1928. The first scholarly Lincoln biography The "Manuscript Edition", number 152 of 1,000 sets, each set containing a leaf of the original working manuscript. The author served as Republican senator for Indiana from 1899-1911, and was a prominent voice in national political debate during those years. "Because of his indefatigable efforts to strip away the myths and legends that had accumulated around Lincoln, the work is regarded as the first Lincoln biography to meet modern scholarly standards" (ANB). The biography was unfinished at Beveridge's death, and the historian Worthington S. Ford undertook the responsibility for seeing the manuscript through publication. Four volumes, large octavo. Original red half morocco by the Riverside Press, spines lettered in gilt, brown endpapers, red cloth sides, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, red silk page-markers. With 4 tissue-guarded hand-coloured photographic views of the Lincoln Memorial, 4 photogravure portrait frontispieces with captioned tissue-guards, 32 further plates and maps. Bookplates to front pastedowns of William Safire and D. Allen Knight, clippings on other copies inserted. Light peripheral rubbing, slight nick at head of spine of vol. I, bindings firm, a handsome set.
