About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1955. [Mountaineering/exploration] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 15cm), pp.302. Green cloth hardback, cartographic endpapers, illustrated dust-jacket. Ink name to front blank, price clipped to front flap. Some light dampmarks to margins, jacket chipped to base of spine and upper. Very good. During World War II, Izzard served with distinction as a Naval Intelligence officer and commando with Ian Fleming's 30 Assault Unit. Highly decorated for gallantry and awarded an OBE, Fleming based elements of his debut novel Casino Royale and its protagonist James Bond on Lt. Cdr. Izzard, especially a card game in which he found himself playing poker against covert Nazi intelligence agents at a casino in Pernambuco, Brazil. Post-war, Izzard returned to journalism as a foreign correspondent - in India to cover the partition crisis, and for a failed search in 1946 for a monster lizard 'the buru' in a remote Assamese valley. This expedition followed, a trek in Tibet to uncover the truth behind the 'Yeti'. Izzard also covered the Middle East for the Daily Mail; in Egypt, then Beirut, conveniently adjacent to trouble brewing in Cairo, Nicosia, Iran, Iraq and the Gulf. His weekend explorations with his children lengthened into a 300-mile camping expedition through the Lebanese mountains with their cook as interpreter and two donkeys for transport. Coincidentally, his daughter Sabrina Izzard owned our bookshop, now run by Ian Fleming's bibliographer. Gilbert, p.16.
