About This Item

Aberystwyth: Welsh Gazette. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1902. 1st Signed and Limited Edition. Hardcover. SIGNED Limited edition of 309 copies which were produced for subscribers. This copy is No.153 and " ...it is owned by David Jones, grandson of John Jones 'Ivon' ." . Signed by the Author underneath this information. (John Jones, aka Ivon, 1820-1898, Was a Welsh radical and man of letters, who played a prominent role in the political life of Cardiganshire & beyond in the late19th century. He was a close acquaintance of the radical preacher Kilsby Jones, & is featured in this book ). THIS copy however also has the added inscription from the Author on the front free endpaper stating that the book was "From the Author to his friend David Jones with the wish that it may be useful to him in his researches into the history of his native Ceredigion - see p xvii. G. E. E. ...1902 " . Page xvii (of the subscribers list) notes that his grandfather "died 1898, Antiquary & Folklorist, Aberystwyth" and this grandson is "one in whose career the author is personally interested. ". Bound up at the end of this special copy are all the original green card covers from the original issue in 12 parts, & an insert re the Binding options and that payment must be in Cash. Tipped in over the older presentation inscription on the ffep is a SIGNED Headed Card from the Author at Ty Tringad, Aberystwyth "...to his dear friends William Frederick & Mrs Gibbins ...where so many prescious hours in my now solitary life have been spent... Christmas 1920." . The card is mounted on paper and surrounded with ink drawings of Menhirs/stones etc, etc, continued onto the endpapers with the Authors captions under each . ALSO a REAL PHOTO of the Author is stuck onto the front pastedown. At the top of the Title page the name F. W. R. Gibbins is written in old ink, but on the reverse of the ffep is written in a more modern hand "For Jane Hinton". So this seems to have been a special copy the Author presented to David Jones, then later (via the author? ) it went to the Gibbins, etc. The book is very sound and tight, bound in 'green' buckram - this always looks tan now with age - some rubbing to the head/tail of the spine & corners. Internally some marks and quite a bit of scattered light foxing (pale tan spotting) here & there in the book, but generally clean throughout otherwise. (xxvi) + 203pp. Tissue guarded b/w Portrait Frontispiece. Plus 33 plates, including plans of Aberystwyth; & of Aberystwyth Castle in Appendix E. A VERY Special copy with personal ADDITIONS - Signed / Initialled many times by the author, with annotated original drawings by him and a real photo of the author added. This book is overweight @ c. 2 kilos and may require extra postage for International buyers only depending on your location. See Images. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Signed by Author .
