Author made extensive researches, the field of investigation including the Mexican and Texas archives, records of British War Office, etc. Considerable important information was also acquired in the Mississippi Valley. Work generally accepted as authoritative on the subject, reversing conclusions of former writers, and discrediting the view that Burr ever planned a separation of the Western States from the Union.
