Written when the author was 80, this is the story of an orthodox American Jewish family in late 19th century San Francisco, and a memoir of the author's childhood. As a young woman, Levy went to Paris with Alice B. Toklas (her neighbor on O'Farrell Street), and was part of the circle of artists & bohemians which included Gertrude Stein, Picasso, Matisse and others, and where she began assembling a remarkable collection of the works of modern French artists
