About This Item

San Francisco: Queer Planet, the international focus group of Queer Nation San Francisco, 1991. Postcard. Seven photo reproduced postcards with various facts about the persecution of LGBT people in different places, 4x5.5 inches, very good condition. The postcards read "Peruvian revolutionaries murdered 39 queers last year," "Being a lesbian in Pakistan could get you stoned...to death," "Queers in Great Britain can now be jailed for touching," "Homosexuality is a capital offense in many Islamic countries," "Last year Iran celebrated the new year by executing some queers," "The Soviet Union still tortures and jails its queers," and "Amnesty? Only if you're heterosexual." Queer Nation formed in March 1990 as an offshoot of ACT UP in NYC. Their most familiar chant was: "We're Here! We're Queer! Get used to it!" These postcards were created in the run-up to Amnesty International's September 1991 meeting to decide on this issue. Despite the opposition of some sections, AI did begin taking up such cases afterwards.
