About This Item

New York: Ariel Books / Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1958. Book. Illus. by Barton, Harvey (Cover Design). Hardcover. First Printing. 183 pages. Stated First Printing: 1958. From the dustjacket: "The ladies of the 23rd Street Church called the gang the Crusaders, but the boys themselves used the name West Side Pirates, and the law and everyone else in town called them 'juvenile delinquents.' Superficially, at least, the last name seemed to fit them best, for all seven of the boys were on a year's probation for beating a helpless old man. Left to their own devices, they probably would have turned to crime if they had not met a soft-spoken stranger named Ed Sorrell....begins to realize that Ed Sorrell has restored their self-respect and given them a sense of team play that is applicable to basketball and to life itself." Corners & spine bumped, dustjacket chipped with 1" tear at top of spine. Was in a church library, with church name/address stamped on fron t & rear endpapers, a name & 1965 written inside front cover, and library pocket w/card on front endpaper. Book has blue boards with silver lettering on spine..
