[Civil Rights] [African American] Civil Rights activist Jesse Jackson was the first black man to run for president in 1984, and later in 1988. Archive of 7 pieces related to Jackson's first nationwide campaign. 6 pamphlets and flyers and one silver gelatin press release photograph measuring between 4.5" x 8.5" - 8.5" - 11". Jackson ran for the democratic party and was the first Black man, and second Black American to produce a nationwide campaign for president behind house representative Shirley Chisholm. His focus was on the civil rights of minority voters that he called the "Rainbow Coalition". Some of the flyer's statements read "If the Democratic Party includes Blacks, Hispanics, women and Asians, it cannot lose. If it locks us out, it cannot win", and "I seek the Democratic nomination to speed the day when Democracy will be real for everybody." Jackson was initially written off as a fringe candidate but shocked pundits when he received third place and over 3 million primary votes becoming the first African American to win any major state primaries. One 8 page pamphlet discusses Jackson's views on bringing peace to the U.S. intervention in Central America, "No foreign policy can succeed which links 'American Interests' to the denial of progress for the overwhelming majority of Central Americans, and allows the gross violation of human rights and killings necessary to deny that progress." Three canvassing flyers call for community action by voting for Jackson and delegates supported by Jackson, a flyer for a rally where Jackson was speaking, and a flyer for an election night event both located in Richmond, CA. The silver gelatin press release shows an early photograph of Jackson being interviewed by a journalist during the Civil Rights movement. Minor foxing and original creasing to some of the ephemera, text and images are clean and crisp, overall in very good condition.
