TOWNSVILLE BRISBANE QUEENSLAND AUSTRALIA AUS. Very Good. 1943. On offer is an exceptional, original 1943 World War II manuscript diary handwritten by Army Nurse Lieutenant Louise A. Hohener a very composed, perhaps ambitious, nurse who writes in a largish 5 x 8 x 1inch page a day 'Woods' Australian Diary' book hardly missing a day and near fully covering each page most days with her erudite observations of the War effort, her colleagues, the doctors and officer staff she interacts with while serving in Australia's Queensland north country somewhere near [Townsville, we believe] but still needing a flight to Brisbane and serving most of the casualties of war from action in Papua New Guinea. The blend of on the ground observations, the constant interaction among the nurses with many senior officers both social and 'politics', the difficulties with the senior nursing officers and the complex blend of tragedy and mundanities of everyday living surrounded by the death and destruction suffered in the South Pacific make for a drama unrivalled by fiction. Here are some snippets: 'Talking to the boys this morning (sat.) they told of capturing a Jap and bring him in as prisoner. In N.G. [New Guinea] it is standing order for all the boys to take 10 grms of quinine daily. When they gave the Jap his he refused. He still doesn't have it.' Newly posted near Brisbane on January 9th she writes in near delirium: 'Our clothes came! Our clothes came ----!!!!!!!!!!!! A great big truck….our furniture, boxes, foot lockers - things from Iron Range [Australia].' 'Mosquitoes are quite bad tonight. Mary told us that Pappy, Helen went out with him the other night was killed over Red River this morning.'
