About This Item
Paris: l Maison, 1848. Hardcover. Very Good. Handbook for Switzerland and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont, 1848, French issue of 3rd edition, lxvii 407pp, original blind stamped cloth titled in gilt with a folding map at rear, a panorama of Mont Blanc with text, and a bookseller's (ITINERAIRES-RICHARD) label on front pastedown. The text is in English. Publisher's purple cloth binding, gilt lettering and blindstamped designs to spine and front board. Interesting mid 19th century travel guide. Includes folio folding view of the Alps at pg. 320 and a folding b&w map at rear. This edition is slightly larger than the English edition and measures c. 4 3/4" W x 7 1/2" H. Mostly clean condition. Boards somewhat toned and gently edge-worn, spine cloth and gilt faded, cloth splitting along the joints so that the spine cloth is a bit loose (although still well attached), textblock very gently but uniformly toned, endpapers browned. VG- overall condition. Lister (#56) indicates the French editions are listed in Bibliotheque Nationale but only the 1850 edition has been seen and paginated. This edition has the same pagination as noted by Lister but has not been seen.
