First title-page remargined, some color added to woodcut frame. First title-page and first and last pages somewhat soiled; remainder wide-margined and clean, with exceptionally clear print. · Comments: Second edition. The first edition was printed between 1514 and 1517 and was one of the largest publishing efforts of its day. It digests 13,845 cases, including 39 brief original reports taken by Fitzherbert himself and extracts of several unprinted year books. This second edition was the last to be printed in a large format. Fitzherbert became a justice of the court of common pleas in 1522, an office he held until his death. As a judge, he was known for his legal conservatism, rejecting several recent precedents (including one won by himself as an advocate) as inconsistent with the ancient law. Whether his industry in compiling the abridgment made him conservative or whether his conservatism motivated his effort is an interesting question. · References: ODNB, J. H.
