It has been three decades since the 1st December 1968, when the British Admiralty handed over the sprawling Naval Base to the Singapore Government for one Singapore dollar. From this humble beginning, under the watchful eye of the British Navy and the management of Swan Hunter (International) Shipyards, 3500 people of a newly formed Sembawang Shipyard Pte Ltd. Took their first rotations through the shipyard, and learned the business of ship repair. Within their first decade, the people of Sembawang went through the first of three major recessions. Over the next ten years, the British left, and the Singaporeans began their slow rise through the ranks.
