Can Japan Globalize?: Studies on Japan's Changing Political Economy and the Process of Globalization in Honour of Sung-Jo Park Hardcover - 2001 - 2001st Edition

by Arne Holzhausen (Editor)

First line

The present volume's theme is where Japan lies in relation to other political economies both in Asia and in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand etc: loosely referred to as the West, used here in italics because of its imprecise lumping together of e.g. the member states of the EU, whose political economies show considerable differences, and because the term has frequently been used in Japan to set up dichotomies of doubtful intellectual rigour for national ideological reasons, as in the nihonjinron (Dale 1986:38).

From the rear cover

Japan's deepest recession since the Second World War has come to an end in 2000. Yet, the task of reforming Japan is far from completed. The current political drift has brought deregulation to a premature end putting the still vulnerable recovery at risk. What structural changes have already taken place? What important reforms have to be undertaken in the future?
The contributions of the book shed light on the transitional path of the Japanese system amid rapid globalization. Can Japan Globalize? covers a broad range of areas from macro- and micro-economic structures to political and social relations.
