Jane's brothers were among the first merino sheep breeders and Hay went into partnership with them on Dropmore Station, near Seymour in Victoria. Some time later he bought Glenlyon Station also near Seymour. As land prices rose due to the gold rush, Hat sold Glenlyon and later bought Boomanoomana run on the Murray River near Mulwala, NSW.
