Promises to the Dead Unknown -

by Mary Downing Hahn

From the publisher

All Jesse Sherman seeks in the Maryland woods is a big old turtle for his uncle Philemon's dinner. Instead, he finds two runaway slaves: Perry, and his pregnant mother, Lydia. In a short while, Jesse finds himself bound by a promise to the dying Lydia to take Perry to Baltimore, where her son can finally be free.

Jesse's skin color is hardly enough protection for the two boys in Baltimore: the city is a particularly dangerous place in the early days of the Civil War. In the end, courage, determination, wits -- and a promise -- will have to see them through.
