In Lullus's Retorica nova rhetorical and linguistic ideas inherited from previous traditions can be distinguished: the word is the vox significativa conveying a concept, as pointed out by Aristotle; for its part, rhetoric is the art of rendering such word pleasant and beautiful so that speakers and listeners should converge at one same aim, as stated by rhetorical manuals in Lullus's own time.
