Out There Beyond Beyond: The Story of Ed and Elaine Ulrich Paperback -

by Edward W. Ulrich; Contribution by Larry M. Lake

From the publisher

In 1936, Alliance pioneer Robert A. Jaffray envisioned a "vast host of people in the mountains of New Guinea" crying out for the gospel. "If men after gold and oil may go [there]," he wrote, referring to early explorers, "why not the missionary seeking precious souls, even though he may have to fly to them? " The Alliance took up Jaffray's challenge and became the first Christian Mission to own aircraft for furthering the cause of world evangelization.

Captain Edward Ulrich, a highly skilled Army Air Corps pilot and training instructor, was assigned to be part of the first team to enter the Baliem Valley. Becoming a literal lifeline for missionary pioneers such as Walter Post, Myron Bromely, Einar Mickelson, Ken Troutman, and others was demanding work. Prayer and precision flying was necessary. Loading and unloading building supplies, furnishings, camping equipment, personal belongings, food supplies, generators, fuel- even a kitten as a Christmas gift for a young missionary boy - were veritable labors of love. Words like "adventure, adversity, peril and tragedy" also describe their experiences. Out There Beyond Beyond, is a gripping, white knuckle story of courage and caring- with a surpise ending.

About the author

Captain Ed Ulrich (1922-2003) served as a pilot with Christian and Missionary Alliance in New Guinea, then with Kroonduif, a KLM subsidiary airline, and later with the CIA's Air America in southeast Asia. Some of these aviation and cross-cultural adventures are recounted in Out There Beyond Beyond. He and his wife Elaine lived in Sharon, Pennsylvania, and were both active members of the North Mar Alliance Church in Warren, Ohio. They have four adult children. DR. LARRY M. LAKE is the coauthor of Captain Edward Ulrich's Out There Beyond Beyond. Larry has written articles about literacy, education, mission, mental health, and aviation. Many of his interests have sprung from early immersion in missionary endeavor when his parents were missionaries in the Baliem Valley of West New Guinea from 1957-1965. His Ph.D., from the University of Pennsylvania, was based on field research of the cross-cultural teaching of writing in New Guinea. He taught in Christian high schools for ten years and retired from Messiah College after 31 years in which he taught literature, writing, and anthropology and was the director of the writing program. His book about American explorer Richard Archbold's 1938 discovery of the Baliem Valley is due out soon from a university publisher. Larry and his wife, Mary Beth, live in Chicago and have an adult son and daughter, and two granddaughters.
