Yesteryear at the Uniontown Speedway Paperback - 2008

by Marci Lynn McGuinness

From the publisher

In 1917, Carl Laemmle, owner of Universal Film Manufacturing Company, donated the $3,000.00, solid-silver Universal Film Trophy to the Uniontown Speedway Boardtrack winner, making the Grand Opening Race the greatest sporting event of the year. The world's best race car drivers competed on the 1 and 1/8 mile banked track, including the Chevrolet brothers, Barney Oldfield and Ralph DePalma. Henry Ford and the elite of the day filled the stands to 50,000 spectators, Film stars arrived on special trains and the Uniontown Speedway Association rolled money out of the office in wooden kegs.
