About the author

Robert Feist went to Rome as a Fulbright fellow in the 1950s after distinguishing himself at the then Cincinnati College-Conservarory of Music. He learned conducting under Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Vittorio Gui, and others at the Rome Opera. He made his conducting debut with his Fulbright colleague Anna Moffo in l955. The Rockefeller Foundation provided a stipend for further study in Eastern Europe and Russia. In Germany, in addition to conducting, Maestro Feist wrote and directed a series on the life and works of Verdi for German television. National Public Radio featured over 100 broadcasts on operatic themes, written and narrated by Feist, including 50 on Music of the Far East, all aired nationally and some abroad on NPR or other networks. A skilled collaborator he always made friends among the singers and conductors who made history in the last great era of opera.
